Solar-powered water pumps are simple to use, functioning much the same way as traditional pumps. After all, they, too, require the use of electricity to move water from one location to another. The difference? Solar-powered pumps get their electrical power from the sun.

How It Works

A solar panel is made of silicon cells that transform the sun’s energy into electricity in order to power the pump. A cord connects the two together so that the electricity harnessed from the sun can be carried from the solar panel to the pump itself.

As the electric flow reaches the water pump, the motor turns and powers the pump to suck water through its pipe and deliver it wherever you direct it to go. Keep in mind that there are two main types of pumps: a surface water pump and a submersible water pump.

A surface water pump sits on dry ground with one pipe going into the water supply and the other pipe going where you want the water to go. A submersible water pump goes underwater, just as its name suggests. This is commonly used in applications, such as wells, fountains, and water features. It may also be used to fill an above-ground water tank if needed.

Top Maintenance Tips for Your Solar Powered Water Pump

Solar-powered water pumps require very little maintenance which is one of the things that draws many people to them. Nonetheless, there are a few things you can do to get the most out of yours. If you have noticed that your pump has stopped working or the flow is slower than normal, it may need your attention.

Keep the Solar Panel Clear. The solar panel is what gives you the power to run your pump. When it isn’t getting the most out of the sun, your pump may lack efficiency. Keep the solar panel clean and clear of debris. You can do this by using a soft cloth with a little dish soap and water. Continue to ensure that it has full access to the sun and isn’t blocked by anything like landscaping.

Clean Your Pump. It is always a good idea to clean your pump from time to time to reduce any buildup, regardless of the type. Surface pumps are exposed to elements and outside debris while those in the water have their own type of debris and gunk that can adhere to their surface.

To clean your pump, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the filter cover from the pump, clean the cover, and check for any debris.
  2. Clean the foam mesh filter membrane and remove any debris.
  3. Check the operation of the variable flow valve to make sure it turns freely.
  4. Check that nothing is stuck in the impeller.
  5. Remove the variable flow valve piece by pulling it gently away from the pump body.
  6. Hold the pump body in one hand and turn the outlet end until it releases from the pump body.
  7. Check for any debris or damage to the impeller.
  8. Remove the impeller assembly by pulling it out of the pump body. Be gentle.
  9. Check and clean the inside of the pump body to ensure good contact between the pump body and the magnet.

Once everything is clean and dry, carefully reassemble the pump.

Check the Pipes. You want to make sure that your pipes are clean and clear of debris and buildup. You can visibly inspect them while the pump is running. Address the removal of any blockages and any leaks you find.

Preparing for Winter. If you live in a cold climate and will be storing your water pump for the season, it is highly recommended that you clean it before you put it away.
