Israel Ties Syria Talks To Military Withdrawal And Druze Protection

TechnologyIsrael Ties Syria Talks To Military Withdrawal And Druze Protection

Israel's government has confirmed that discussions are underway with Syria. Israeli officials explained that any agreement must meet specific conditions. Among these are the removal of armed forces from southwestern Syrian territory and guaranteeing protection for the Druze community.

A push from U.S. officials has led Damascus to intensify its dialogue with Israel regarding a security pact. Syrian leaders appear optimistic that this arrangement might restore lands that Israel acquired recently, although it would constitute a limited understanding rather than a comprehensive peace treaty. Sources close to the matter indicated that while progress has been made, a complete deal remains distant.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Sunday that the talks had advanced steadily, yet a finalized pact was not immediately on the horizon. The ongoing conflict between the two sides dates back to Israel's establishment in 1948, with periodic ceasefire periods failing to produce lasting peace. Syria has consistently rejected recognition of Israel's legitimacy.

Following a rebel uprising that removed former leader Bashar al-Assad on December 8, Israel carried out significant strikes on Syrian military sites, with a focus on installations linked to the defense ministry. At the same time, military forces were deployed in southern Syria while U.S. officials were persuaded to maintain Syria’s fragmented structure for strategic reasons.
Negotiations remain ongoing.
